I grew up in New York City and live now in Jalisco, Mexico. During the 1970’s, while living in Ann Arbor,  Michigan, I taught myself to make a fine print, guided by the classic books of Ansel Adams (the Camera, the Negative and the Print) and delving into the history of photography. Edward Weston was my first inspiration but, aesthetically my eye was drawn to the renowned European photojournalists & 'street' photographers, especially the Hungarian, André Kertész. Early attempts show the obvious influence, while my own vision has developed only through practice.

After the 1970’s photography took a back-seat to a professional career as a management consultant, leaving little opportunity for camera work. However, during the eighties and nineties I lived in Latin America and Southern Africa for extended periods while providing pro-bono support implementing several development and self-determination projects. Whenever possible, I was on the street to capture life in the background of what were significant political events.

In 1995 I was invited to participate in a semi-annual scholarly exchange of management and leadership studies in Cuba. Speaking Spanish, sharing ideas with Cuban professionals, and building close relationships with some and with their families, I gained a unique perspective far removed from that of the tourist.

Every free moment found me again on the street with my camera as I sought to produce a portrait of life which any Cuban would appreciate and find familiar -- a look into a world alien to most North Americans at that time.

In 2001 I held a solo exhibit at the prestigious Fototeca de Cuba gallery in Havana, and delivered a 3-day workshop there (analog-to-digital workflow from negative scanning and the ‘digital darkroom’ to B&W inkjet printing with piezography) for a select group of Cuban photographers. Fototeca de Cuba currently holds two of my prints in their collection, and prints have also been purchased for several private collections.

Today, technology brings many options for displaying photographs. I am grateful for the opportunity to make my work widely available - including on-line, in books and as finished prints, which uniquely present the full potential of the image. I hope you find these photographs of interest and enjoyment. I welcome your comments.
